How years of eating high fibre cereal, low fat products and extra lean meat caused me to consistently put on weight, year after year.

The months leading up to my 30th birthday were subliminally haunting me. Not married. No kids. Chubby. Unfit.

It was time to make some changes. I made an effort to start eating more healthy (or what I thought was more healthy) and doing more exercise.

My diet consisted mostly of high fibre cereal, Ryvita and low GI breads with low fat spreads and healthy toppings, low GI wraps with lots of stir fried veggies, smoothies, fruit juices, low fat everything I could get my hands on, plus I always opted for the extra lean meat.

All my runner friends were thin, so as much as I hated it, I started running. After 2 months, I had developed a hip flexor strain which was painful enough to wake me up at night and I was even chubbier than before.

I was eating healthy and exercising – why the hell was I still putting on weight?

I was getting extremely frustrated.

7 kg’s down in 6 months – no exercize

I finally gave in and bought… the fat jeans.

Now I love jeans and I’ll frequently spend R900 on a pair so this was uncool. I now had 5 pairs of jeans in my cupboard that I couldn’t fit into.

Fast forward 11 months and guess what?

Not only was I back into those original 5 pairs of jeans, I had to purchase… wait for it… a skinnier pair! (She said doing cartwheels around the room!)

7 kilo’s down!

Now that might not sound like a lot to you, but in cm’s and in the right places, that’s a hell of a sexier bikini body.

But let me just be honest with you.

I’m rather lazy. I HATE working up a sweat.

Which means I’ll never have the classic Clifton 4th beach body. Which is perfectly fine by me.

If a genie told me I had 1 wish and that I had to use it to choose between selecting a body like J-Lo’s or Angelina’s, I’d go for J-Lo’s. I like me a bit of booty and I love my food!

I’d heard people talk about the 80/20 rule – where 80% of your body composition is determined by what you eat, but I honestly never believed it, until I managed to experience it for myself.

By eliminating grains, wheat and sugar and replacing them with healthier, cleaner (and tastier) alternatives, I managed to lose the weight and keep it off with ease. No more bloated tummy, no more heartburn and… no more love handles :)

The one thing that I love about being Primal is that I never have to go hungry. With other diets I constantly felt like I was depriving myself and I’d feel guilty for being hungry, whereas this way of living is a totally different mindset.

Primal Living is about removing all the processed and pre-packaged rubbish out of your diet and returning to a more natural and whole way of eating. It’s about eating delicious meat, veggies and full cream dairy with lots of fruit and berries thrown in.

It’s about getting into nature and enjoying everyday for what it has to offer. It’s about going for a walk in the forest with friends on a Sunday morning. It’s about being barefeet and feeling the sand between your toes.

How the 90 Day Challenge works

This is a “make it work for you” challenge.

I’ve included a wide range of breakfast, lunch and dinner options for you to pick and choose from.

You don’t need to keep up with shopping for certain ingredients for certain days, you can pick and choose as you see fit, as long as you stick to the basic shopping list and Primal guidelines outlined in the recipes for 90 days, you’ll lose weight!

If you find a favourite dessert that you love, and you feel like eating it for breakfast, then go for it, what’s life without dessert for breakfast!?

This Challenge is NOT for you, if:

  • You’re a vegetarian or have a problem with eating meat
  • You’re lactose intolerant or have a problem with eating dairy
  • You’re looking for a ‘quick fix’ diet
  • You’re an extremely sporty person (like more than 2 hours a day vibe. I’m not sure how a low-carb high-fat diet would work in relation to this level of exercize.)
  • 90 Days seems too long. It takes time to see and feel transformative changes and I believe our bodies need time to reboot and for our metabolism to speed up.

My 1st weigh in results: Day 15 and I’ve lost 1kg but… 2cm around my waist, 3cm around my hips, 2cm around my bicep and a whopping 5cm around my thigh! Feeling fantastic!
